Vocational Skills & Handcraft Showcase

Purpose

Not every student will go to university immediately. Vocational Skills Showcase exposes SSS2-SSS3 students to trades they can start with low capital: soap making, tie-dye, hair braiding, phone repair basics, catering. NGO “Skill-Up Nigeria” brings artisans as trainers. Message: “Your hands can pay your fees”.

 

Training Stations

Station 1

Soap & Detergent – Students make liquid soap, learn costing: ₦200 materials can sell for ₦500.

Station 2

Fashion & Beadwork – Learn 3 bead patterns and simple Ankara headband.

Station 3

Food & Baking- Make chin-chin, cupcakes, small chops with profit calculation.

Station 4

Tech Skills-Phone screen guard installation, basic troubleshooting.

Station 5

Agriculture – Plant tomatoes in sack, learn backyard farming.

 

Expo Day

Students display products they made in 3-day training. Parents and community buy products. Money goes to student + school fund 50/50. Best 5 students get starter kit from NGO: soap making materials worth ₦15,000.

 

Mindset Shift

Boys learn catering is not “girls’ work”. Girls learn phone repair is not “boys’ work”. Students stop saying “I’ll just sit at home after WAEC”. They leave with skill + small capital.

 

Follow-Up 

Skill Club meets weekly after school. Best students become trainers for JSS3 students next term. School invites parents to 1 day “Learn a Skill with Your Child” to reduce stigma around vocational work.
