Student Press Club & School Newsroom Launch
June 6, 2026

Filling the Gap
Students consume TikTok and gossip but rarely create responsible content. The Student Press Club & Newsroom Launch teaches SS students journalism, fact-checking, and ethical storytelling. Partner NGO “Media 4 Schools” equips a small room with 2 laptops, a microphone, and teaches students to run the school’s monthly newsletter + podcast.
The goal: kill fake news by training young reporters.
Training & Roles
Students apply for roles
- Editors-check facts.
- Reporters-interview teachers/students.
- Designers- lay out newsletter on Canva.
- Podcast Hosts- record 5 min “School News in 5”.
Training covers
- Interview skills — how to ask questions without bias.
- Photography — taking clean photos for school events.
- Media Ethics — no shaming, no unverified rumors, respect privacy.
Monthly Output
Newsletter “The Beacon”: 4 pages, distributed via WhatsApp to parents + printed for notice board. Sections: Principal’s Note, Student Spotlight, Club News, “Myth vs Fact” health column.
Podcast “5 Minutes at GSS”: Recorded every Friday. Episode 1: “What SSS3 students wish JSS1 knew”. Students learn to speak clearly and edit audio.
Real-World Impact
Press club students covered the Coding Boot camp and their article got shared by the NGO on LinkedIn — 2 students got internship invites. Teachers love it because misinformation about exam dates reduces. Students gain confidence speaking publicly and writing professionally, which helps WAEC English Orals.
Sustainability
NGO trains 3 teachers as media advisers. After 1 year, students train JSS3 students to take over. The newsroom runs on ads from school vendors — ₦500 for a small ad — so it becomes self-funded. The skill lasts: alumni now study Mass Comm in uni and credit the Press Club.
